Take-a-Walk Wednesday with Wendy

The walks are moderate (narrow dirt paths with some uneven footing, rocks, and moderate inclines) unless noted. Walk is paced to group led by Wendy Hill, Open Space Coordinator of Lyme and the Vice President of Lyme Land Trust.  Mileage is approximate. Bring a water bottle and dress for the weather. 

Free to Lyme’s Senior Center members. $5 for non-members. Reservations are required.  Please email Caitlin Perkins at cperkins@oldlyme-ct.gov or call (860)434-1605 ext. 241.

Sept 18, 2024
John Lohman CT River Preserve, 33 Colt Lane, Old Lyme CT. Parking is along the road. A short steep incline opens to a beautiful expanse of meadow. We will walk along the mowed path to each our destination, Whale Rock, a spectacular outcropping with views of Lord Cove and the CT River. Bring your binoculars. 1.5 miles
Directions: Park along the road near 33 Colt Lane, Old Lyme CT.

October 16
Banningwood Preserve, Lyme CT- We will walk an 1.5 mile loop through a variety of habitats, with a few steep grades. We will check out the ongoing habitat restoration project carried out by the Lyme Land Trust along Roaring Brook.
Directions: Meet at parking lot on 19 Town St. (Rte. 82), 1/4 mile north of Hadlyme Four Corners.

November 13
McColluch Family Open Space and Lay-Allen Preserve, Old Lyme CT – We will walk bout 2.5 miles. This beautiful property was once a horse farm. A highlight of the hike is Rook’s Meadow and Jimmy’s Pond.
Directions: Whippoorwill Rd. Old Lyme, CT. Parking lot is almost 3 miles from Route 1 or 3.5 miles from Mile Creek Road.

December 11
Selden Creek Preserve, Joshuatown Rd. Lyme – Meet at Selden Preserve parking lot on Joshuatown Rd. 2+ mile hike to beautiful vistas of Selden Creek and surrounding marshlands.
Directions: The parking lot is about 4 miles from the intersection of Rte 156 and Joshuatown Rd in Lyme.

The walks are easy, about 1 mile, fairly flat dirt paths with some uneven footing, unless noted. Gentle pace led by Wendy Hill, Open Space Coordinator of Lyme and the Vice President of Lyme Land Trust. Bring a walking stick, water bottle and dress for the weather.

September 25
Brockway-Hawthorne Preserve, Brush Hill Road, Lyme. This one-mile dirt path loop provides a delightful walk. Ancient oak trees still stand guard over the former pasture land bordered by stone walls and an old abandoned quarry.
Directions: The parking lot for the Brockway-Hawthorne Preserve is on the west side of Brush Hill Road about 1/2 mile south of Hadlyme Four Corners (Hadlyme Country Store).

October 23
Griswold Point, 11 Seaside Lane, Old Lyme, CT – We will walk along the beach shore to Griswold Point and back. Less than a mile there and back. Bring binoculars if you have them.
Directions: Meet at White Sands Beach Parking Lot, 11 Seaside Ln, Old Lyme.

November 20
Champlain North Open Space, Wickford Lane, Old Lyme, CT
An easy one-mile walk on dirt trail passes by boggy holes and gentle ledges. We will walk by the Barbizon oak, an ancient oak that was inspiration for painters from the Lyme Art Colony.
Directions: Parking is at the end of the Wickford Lane. It is a turn off of Rte 1 (old Boston Post Rd) just north of the Old Lyme Inn.

December 18
Gillette’s Castle State Park, Lyme and East Haddam. We will explore on the paved park road and on easy dirt trails. We will see the beautiful Christmas decorations at the Castle and the beautiful view of the CT River. Optional walk up steps to the terrace. About 1 mile.
Directions: Entrance is at 67 River Rd, East Haddam, CT. Meet at the main parking lot by the visitor center.
