Geology Walk at Honey Hill Preserve

Time: 9:30 am-11:30 am
Place: Honey Hill Preserve, Clark Rd., Lyme, pull-in parking about 1/4 mile from the intersection of Rte. 82 and Clark Rd.
Contact Email: education@lymelandtrust.org
Bring your geologic questions to this talk and walk guided by former CT State geologist Ralph Lewis through the Lyme Land Trust’s Honey Hill Preserve. We will have a discussion about the area’s geologic significance. The famous Honey Hill Fault is mapped as being just north of the preserve. How does this affect the bedrock topography? The bedrock is more evident here because the Honey Hill Preserve is a good example of an “upland till sight”. A fairly thin blanket of glacial till (rocky soil) is draped over the bedrock in most places. The delightful Babbling Brook runs through the preserve with several brook crossings on the trail.
The hike will be about two hours, moderately paced with moderately easy terrain with one short steep hill. Sturdy shoes are a must; a walking stick would be helpful as well.
Space is limited. Reservations are required. Contact education@lymelandtrust.org to reserve a spot. Inclement weather will postpone the event.
