The opening reception for Celebrating Lyme’s Beauty, a juried exhibition of works painted en plein air at Lyme Land Conservation Trust’s Clucas Field during the second annual Lyme Paintout. The paintings will be on view at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum’s Glassenberg Gallery from June 1-30th, and at the Lyme Art Association from July 7-September 3 (where they will be available for purchase).

This easy two hour walk on old woods roads will feature some hilly spots with lovely views. The purpose is to explain and show participants the results of a property management project that was started a few years ago. The discussion will demonstrate the use of deer fencing to protect early growth, invasive species control, mowing of fields, results of prior logging activities and a walk along a creek to see a new Pitch Pine Plantation. Since this is being held on private property, it is a Land Trust Members only walk with a limited number of participants. Call Diana Boehning for reservations and directions. 860-434-2336

Second Lyme Paintout

The Lyme Art Association, the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, and the Lyme Land Conservation Trust will be sponsoring a day of en plein air painting at Clucas Field, a beautiful meadow lined with stone walls on Brush Hill Road, on the left just past Tantumorantum Road. There will be signs pointing to the event and to parking. All are welcome to come and paint (painters must register with the Lyme Art Association) or just watch and appreciate artists at work. Light refreshments will be available. Please contact the Lyme Art Association at 860-434-7802 for more information. Rain date May 6.

Fish Ladders in Lyme

Marine wildlife expert Linda Bireley will demonstrate how fish use the ladder to reach their
spawning grounds upstream above the old mill dam. She will discuss how the returning fish are
monitored and the species that return annually to the 8 Mile River to produce new generations.
This program is rain or shine & appropriate for all ages. Polarized sunglasses suggested.

Every year the Essex Savings Bank pledges to donate 10% of its after tax net income to non-profit organizations and community development projects operating in the towns of Chester, Deep River, Essex, Lyme, Madison, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook. Organizations receive funds proportionate to the number of votes they receive.
Anyone with an account at Essex Savings Bank may vote. So be sure to stop by the bank between February 1 and March 15 to complete your ballot.

Westbrook will outline what is being done to rebuild wild populations of the threatened New
England Cottontail. He will present photos and discuss the natural history of the New England
Cottontail, its habitat, reasons for its decline, and efforts by both governmental agencies and
private groups to save this native rabbit.

Photography is another way to remind ourselves of what we have and to show how important it is to protect and preserve that heritage.

The three independent judges are William Burt, a naturalist who has won acclaim for his books of wildlife photography: Rare and Elusive Birds of North America, Shadowbirds, and his recently released Marshes: The Disappearing Edens. Amy Kurtz Lansing, Curator at the Florence Griswold Museum and a Yale University doctoral candidate in the History of Art. She is also the author of Historical Fictions: Edward Lamson Henry’s Paintings of Past and Present. Rudy Wood-Muller, a photographic illustrator and designer. His photos were exhibited at the New York Worldâs Fair in 1964 and the Rochester Institute of Technology. A group of his photographs have been selected to be part of the Permanent Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Wouldnât you like to know the name of the beautiful slithering creature in your stone wall, garden or wood pile, understand why it is sharing your home ground, and whether it is venomous or can be approached? Linda Krulikowski, author of Snakes of New England, will explain all this and more in a lecture and live demonstration with her pet snake.
This is a Trekkers Event. Children are welcome. Free of charge.
